The man who fought for the progressive state...

As I was watching the news channel a breaking news just flashed into the tv screen.  M Karunanidhi is hospitalized! Well, It's not a shocking news to many of the people who know about his health and way he is being wheelchaired from few years. but its definitely a heartbreaking news to many of his followers in Tamilnadu.
Mr. M Karunanidhi, popularly known as Kalaignar in the southern state of India, Tamilnadu. He is also one of the longest-serving MLA in India. He has served as MLA for 61 long years that's definitely a record indeed.
Karunanidhi was born in a small village in what is now eastern Tamil Nadu and was the member of a caste of musicians. He left school early and began working as a screenwriter in the Tamil film industry. There he honed skills for promoting the Dravidian movement against Brahmans (the highest caste in the Hindu social order) that later contributed to his rise as a popular politician.

Karunanidhi began his career as a screenwriter in the Tamil film industry.Through his wit and oratorical skills he rapidly rose as a popular politician. He was famous for writing historical and social (reformist) stories which propagated the socialist and rationalist ideals of the Dravidian movementto which he belonged. He first began using Tamil cinema to propagate his political ideas through the movie Parasakthi.Parasakthiwas a turning point in Tamil cinema, as it espoused the ideologies of the Dravidian movement and also introduced two prominent actors of Tamil filmdom, Sivaji Ganesan and S. S. Rajendran. The movie was initially banned but was eventually released in 1952. It was a huge box office hit, but its release was marred with controversies. The movie was opposed by orthodox Hindus since it contained elements that criticized Brahmanism. Two other movies written by Karunanidhi that contained such messages were Panam and Thangarathnam. These movies contained themes such as widow remarriage, abolition of untouchability, self-respect marriages, abolition of zamindari and abolition of religious hypocrisy. As his movies and plays with strong social messages became popular, they suffered from increased censorship; two of his plays in the 1950s were banned.
Karunanidhi rose to fame as a scriptwriter for the Modern Theatres Studio in Salem about 350 kilometers from Madras or present day Chennai. T R Sundaram, the owner of Modern Theatres Studio at Yercaud foot hills, was instrumental in honouring the talents of Karunanidhi, Jayalalithaa and M G Ramachandran.
Karunanidhi became involved in politics in his early teens, beginning with public protests against the use of the Hindi language in the region. He formed organizations for the local youth and students and started a newspaper that eventually became the Murasoli, the DMK’s official newspaper. He became a close associate of DMK founder C.N. Annadurai and first received broader notice in Tamil politics when he led a 1953 protest in a town where its Tamil name had been replaced with one honoring an industrialist from northern India with a Hindi name.
Karunanidhi in his early life.
Karunanidhi, running as an independent candidate, was first elected to the legislative assembly of Madras state (the name for Tamil Nadu until 1968) in 1957. Beginning with the 1962 assembly polls (which included the DMK), he was continually reelected to that body.

He became the party’s treasurer in 1961 and deputy leader of the opposition when the party entered the state assembly the following year. After the DMK won the 1967 assembly elections (with Karunanidhi soundly defeating his Indian National Congress [Congress Party] opponent), the party formed the government, and Annadurai became chief minister. Karunanidhi was named the minister for public works. Annadurai died in early 1969, and Karunanidhi succeeded him as the head of DMK and as chief minister. His first tenure lasted only until January 1971, but another DMK victory in assembly elections later that year returned him to the chief minister’s office.
In 1972, however, a new party, the All India Dravidian Progressive Federation (All India Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, AIADMK), split from the DMK. Thereafter, the two parties became bitter rivals and traded terms heading the state government.
In 2006, at the age of 82, Karunanidhi became chief minister of Tamil Nadu for the fifth time, after a DMK-Congress alliance had secured a majority of seats in assembly elections. The party had won on the promise that it would provide cheap rice to the citizenry and a free television for every household in the state. By 2011, however, such incentives were not enough to overcome allegations of corruption, and the party was thoroughly trounced by the AIADMK in assembly elections. Although Karunanidhi easily retained his seat, only 22 other DMK candidates could win in the polling. He was by then in poor health, but he remained the DMK’s supreme leader and continued to command immense popularity in Tamil Nadu politics.
At this moment let's wish a man of revolution a speedy recovery.

It is ridiculous to describe Gauri as anti-Hindu as it is ridiculous as belittling Buddha, Basavanna, Narayana guru and Ambedkar

The last few days have been strangely painful and numbing. Men, some of them young, have been justifying a cold blooded murder. Reading the headlines quoting the killers , “Gauri was killed for her anti-Hindu ideology,” i have been very disturbed. If media cannot differentiate between Hinduism and Hindutva, how will the common man?
Many people across the country were devastated by Gauri Lankesh’s murder. Many openly gloated at her brutal killing. Others, faceless and anonymous on social media, even celebrated her death. All in the name of ‘Hinduism’. A woman member of BJP Yuva Morcha even posted that a Parashuram, the (name of the) alleged killer of Gauri, should be born in every Indian house. The Sri Ram Sene, which is today claiming that it has nothing to do with the alleged killer, has reportedly sought funds to help his family.
If this article can in any small way change perceptions and garner support for the values that Gauri stood for, i would be satisfied and the memory of Gauri, redeemed. Let me make one thing absolutely clear. Gauri never opposed the religious beliefs of the people. She celebrated the Ganesha festival as she did Bakr Eid and Christmas, with great joy and fervour.
What Gauri did oppose was the manipulation of people’s faith by vested interests. She was also against fundamentalism in all religions. In that sense she followed Ambedkar who said his respect is reserved for such religion which upholds equality and fraternity. As a corollary she opposed the casteism and patriarchy that is the basis of Hindutva. I recollect reading a dozen of Gauri’s articles condemning patriarchal and fundamental dictums and practices within Islam and Christianity too.
Gauri always believed that people’s faith in God and religion is completely different from organised politics based on manipulating people’s religious sentiments. Then the question arises, was Gauri not religious? Yes and no. If religion is defined as looking for God in every human being, she was religious. If being empathetic about the toiling and oppressed is spiritual, she was most spiritual.
If harming human sensibilities and killing in the name of God is religious, no she was not religious. At a philosophical level she did not dwell deep into the questions of existence of God or any supernatural power. There she followed Buddha. She never considered mediation of God or religion necessary to consider fellow humans as brothers and sisters.
For example, in an article written a few months before her murder, she had made it amply clear that she supports the Lingayat religion as perceived by the working class sharanas of 12th century who propounded an egalitarian social order, against the Vedic Brahminical Hindu social order based on caste and gender discrimination. It is ridiculous, therefore, to describe Gauri as anti-Hindu. It is as ridiculous as belittling Buddha, Basavanna, Narayana guru and Ambedkar on the same charges. Gauri also strongly believed that RSS does not represent the true spirit of Indian civilisation or our religious traditions.
Gauri did not have a child of her own, but she was a mother to many, she used to call everyone me nan koosu(my child), and many others like Kanhaiya Kumar and Umar Khalid.  Isn’t it thus a cruel irony that the operation to kill Gauri was named “Amma” even by her killers? How does one contemplate an ideology, or set of beliefs, which demonise human sensibilities, and set in force a chain of events, a plan, to kill one’s amma?

A bit of a Writer’s Block

I have been a little lost lately. Trying to find myself. Putting myself out there too much. Wondering hopelessly, in search of nothing. Have you ever felt that? Being lost in search of the unknown. Well, it has happened. I thought of myself as someone who knows himself, who knows what he likes, dislikes, who knows where he is headed. This disillusionment led me to a weird place, which I never thought I would be in. A state of just being, existing for the sake of it. I had lost my drive towards my goals, I had become a wanderer, but a lost one.
My love for expressing myself through my writing had slowly faded as I tried to fit to the norm. I know I am unique as we all are. But I know I’m a lot different, and yet I write the way everyone else writes, try to fit my brains into that tiny little box. I forgot, in the meanwhile, that I am an artist who paints through his words, and creates wonderful imagery which just starts with my imagination. I was proud enough to believe that I do not need to explain myself, to tell you guys the truth about things while I ranted on about ‘acceptable’ topics.
But I let myself go. I have had a lot of time to think, to ponder. And sometimes to be mindless and isolated from all thoughts. So many places that I have visited, so many beautiful sunsets that I have not missed. So many people that I have met, so many temptations that I have indulged in. I have danced my heart out till wee hours in the morning, drank until I do not remember my name, slept for days and eaten till my stomach hurt. I have seen the sunrise from the skies, a sunset which brought me to tears.
A friend put up a quote saying- “I have traveled through madness to find ME.” And yes, I have definitely been mad and I shall always be. I want to tell you my stories, share my emotions and my experiences. I want to make you feel, want you to flinch, frown and smile. I want you to feel what I feel. I want to make you think. I want to share my experience of driving through the six south Indian states.
And in the end of the year, and the wake of the new year(Ugadi) to come, let me excite you for what is to come.
